Hybrid Solar Lighting
Hybrid
solar lighting is the newest advance in the
field of solar energy.
This system focuses on both industrial as well
as commercial buildings, with many homeowners
viewing this as an environmentally friendly
source of viable lighting.
Hybrid solar lighting uses optical fibers to
transmit solar energy directly into the
building, instead of employing solar panels that
collect and store the electricity. Because
hybrid solar lighting bypasses the solar panels,
it produces lighting that is more efficient. The
reason for this is that systems, which use
traditional solar panels, and standard light
bulbs, only have approximately 2% efficiency of
the original solar energy because solar panels
can only utilize approximately 15% of the sun’s
energy they receive and standard light bulbs
lose the majority of their energy as heat.
However, hybrid solar lighting systems are
capable of using approximately 50% or more of
the original solar energy they receive.
In addition, with hybrid solar lighting systems
the optical fibers are cool enough to touch with
your bare hands reducing the risk of children
burning themselves. Another benefit that hybrid
solar lighting offers is that they give off
indirect sunlight. This means that they produce
full spectrum light instead of the narrow band
that most light bulbs produce.
The reason these lights are referred to as
“Hybrid,” is that they utilize artificial light.
Approximately 20% of the light produce by hybrid
solar lighting is created artificially and this
amount can increase as needed. This occurs
automatically because of photo sensors, which
determine the
light levels in the room.
The price for a hybrid solar lighting for a full
setup is approximately $40,000 for 10,000 sq.
ft. However, more advances in technology occurs
it possible for the price of hybrid solar
lighting to drop.
